Rathgormack qualified for the Quarter-Finals of the Senior Football Championship when they easily accounted for a depleted St Saviours outfit at Kilmacthomas last Saturday evening.

Both sides came in to the game with a chance of taking route one and a win for either side would have guaranteed them a place in the knock-out stages. St Saviours were forced to field without several regulars with Brian Power out with a broken arm and impressive corner-back Peter Crowley also out with an injury.

These losses proved too much for St Saviours to bear and Rathgormack romped home with a spectacular performance from corner-forward Paudie Whelan who helped himself to a hat-trick of goals.

Rathgormack and Whelan showed their intentions as early as the first minute when he got on the end of a good team movement to fire over the opening score. Whelan’s full-forward line colleague, Robbie Power doubled his side’s advantage a minute later with a neat finish.

Sean Corcoran did get St Saviours off the mark with a pointed free in the 5th minute but Rathgormack went straight up the field and added another couple of points through Robbie and Kevin Power.

This brace of points gave Rathgormack a three point lead. Three points became six after ten minutes when Paudie Whelan shook off his marker and fired past Paul Houlihan to raise the first green flag of the game.

Former county star Edmund Hogan then decided to get in on the act and scored a couple of points. One a pointed free which amazingly, was the only score that Rathgormack scored from a placed ball in the entire game.

Man of the match, Paudie Whelan then got his second goal of the game in the 22nd minute which effectively ended the game as a contest as it gave Rathgormack an eleven point lead.
