Westmeath 1-10; Waterford 1-8

Waterford’s unbeaten run in the Bord Gais Energy National League came to an abrupt end when they went down by two points to Westmeath in Moate last Saturday. After 30 minutes of the first half Westmeath lead by 4 points to 3, when in the 5 minutes of added time played, Westmeath’s Laura Walsh shot went in off the underside of the crossbar from close range for the opening goal. Sarah Dolan added two points to stretch Westmeath’s lead . The half time score was Westmeath 1-6 Waterford 0-4.

Points from Sinead and Michelle Ryan in the opening minutes of the second half narrowed the gap to three points. Westmeath then added to their score with points from Laura Walsh and Maud Anne Foley. The Waterford forwards, who had been guilty of some terrible shooting found their range in the last fifteen minutes of the match with points from Aileen Wall, Michelle Ryan, Grainne Enright, and Louise Ryan. A well taken goal by Linda Wall on 60 minutes was not enough to close the gap. Westmeath won on a score line of 1-10 to Waterfords 1-8

Waterford travel to Fermanagh in two weeks time for what will be a difficult encounter with last year’s All-Ireland Intermediate finalists.
