Another legendary display WIT style of true grit and determination earned Colm Bonnar’s charges a tilt at the title after they staged a battling second half comeback at Dangan on Friday afternoon.
As he had proven all year Tipperary’s Timmy Hammersley was again immense in the scoring stakes, with his 40th minute goal springing WIT to life and put them ahead for the first time in this contest.
WIT were forced to battle throughout this contest as UL set the ground running early on, with a trio of scores from Offaly’s Shane Dooley, Matt Ruth of Kilkenny and Limerick defender Seamus Hickey pushing them 0-3 to 0-0 clear by the eighth minute.
Passage East’s Tommy Connors also proved a thorn in WIT’s side against his brother Noel, and contributed a fine point midway through the first half to give his side a 0-5 to 0-2 lead.
Hammersley kept WIT in touch, with Adrian Power also pulling off a fine save from a Tommy Connors goal shot as injury time approached, but UL were fully deserving of their 0-9 to 0-5 interval lead.
A fourth Dooley point edged UL five points clear within a minute of the restart, but WIT failed to give up and pushed into a 1-8 to 0-10 lead, with Hammersley’s goal.
Dooley pushed UL a point ahead with five minutes remaining but a Brian O’Meara point and a quartet of Hammersley scores late on ensured WIT claimed a four-point win.
