Irish surfing legend rides again!

Last weekend history was truly witnessed on the beach in Tramore, as the first man ever to surf a wave in Ireland in 1949 re-created his famous feat 60 years later! Joe Roddy is recognized as the first person ever to take a wave on a surfboard in Ireland (even though the sport was not really to take hold for another two decades here).

Joe looked as spry and fresh as any other surfer on the beach as he donned his wetsuit and ventured out to sea on a 14ft wooden hulled board he built himself as an exact replica of the version he first fashioned in the spring of 1949 out of discarded furniture and tea-chests. The event was organized by the T-Bay Surf Club (est. 1967) in Tramore to coincide with the grand finale of its kids winter surf league which helps children (from the age of six to teenagers) to hone self-confidence, ocean awareness, water safety, good sportsmanship and of course surfing skills.

Tramore was blessed once again with great weather on the day, and the waves were at a safe and manageable size for all involved in the days surfing activities. The kids went out to the shoreline with Joe Roddy for some pre surf training and advice, and then all went into the water for a big surf session together. Joe had actually been out earlier on the board, scoring several rides and quite frankly, displaying classic form using a paddle to steer the massive board. Interestingly enough, that old way of surfing is coming back around and modern paddle boards now replicate the style of surfing that Joe did six decades ago.

The kids enjoyed being in Joe’s company and many of them actually got to ride tandem with the Legendary Irish surfer on back guiding them safely to the shore on the replica Blueboard also named “The Legend”.

The highlight of the day was probably when the kids received trophies, hats and t-shirts all signed by Joe Roddy, to commemorate their efforts and dedication to this fantastic sport. The festivities were rounded off with a great barbecue at the T-Bay Surf & EcoCentre (Home of the T-Bay Surf Club and Irish Surfing Hall of Fame) that was truly a family affair and enjoyed by all who attended.

Surfing is a great activity for kids, offering elements that appeal and reach out to all types of children. The focus is always on water safety as well as fun to be sure!
