Waterford Racing Club came tantalisingly close to maintaining its streak of wins this weekend at Ras Luimini in Caherconlish, Co. Limerick. Our Novice A4 riders were the stars of the show for the club on the day. We are very proud of our record of developing beginners into real racers, so it is always particularly satisfying when our newcomers perform well.

Ras Luimini takes place on a particularly fast course and with the strong tailwind conditions for the last 10k of the lap, it was very difficult for any moves to stick, so it was inevitable that it came down to a sprint finish. With a sharp left turn before the final straight position is everything and a strong team effort from Rolf Power to bring Sean Keating to the front on that final corner gave us a fighting chance of the victory. Sean did not disappoint showing the bunch a clean pair of heels up the final climb, but he was narrowly beaten on the line into second place. A fantastic result for the newcomer and one which moves him very close to an A3 license.

Ian Butler has done well in this race before but was squeezed wide on the final bend forcing him to pick his way through the bunch on the final straight. He did superbly well however to still finish in 6th place, which puts him just one more result away from his A3 license. Also in the points was Shane Power in the A1 race, who finished in 10th place in a field packed full of semi professionals.

Well done to all of our riders on another successful weekend for Waterford cycling.
