On February 3rd the Stella Maris (Tramore) volleyball cadet team travelled to Croom in Limerick to play in the All-Ireland Final. Approaching Croom the girl’s nerves were evident and the tension could be felt.

Before the match began an enthusiastic group of Stella Maris supporters entered the hall with drums, banners and full singing voices. Captain Jenny Galvin gave inspiring words to her team as they prepared to play St Bridget’s from Loughrea, Co Galway.

The match began with Tara Power serving for Stella Maris. St Brigids’ strong defence made it difficult for Stella Maris to settle into the game and build on their attack. After Stella Maris first time-out Michelle Tierney was brought in and did well assisting with back court cover.

However, despite some good rallies St Brigids continued to dominate and at set point Stella Maris faced another injury blow when Cora Flavin was carried off with torn ligaments, leaving St Brigids to take the first set 25-13. Stella Maris had already lost key defender Orlaith McAuliffe to injury in a challenge match the previous week.

Strong spiking from Vikki Falconer and Tara Power early in the second set allowed Stella Maris the chance to put some much needed scores on the board. Jenny Galvin and Niamh O’Byrne set very well and provided some vital cover in defence.

St Brigid’s, however, were determined to hold onto their one set lead and fought back with a fine display of skill in both service and attack. Young Ornaith Hendersen did a great job in place of Cora Flavin. Stella Maris lost their way again following some service errors and unlucky roof touches allowing St Brigid’s extend their lead.

In attack Stella Maris found it difficult to find any gaps in an excellent St Brigid’s defence. St Brigid’s went on to win the second set 25-14pts and take the All Ireland Cadette girls Volleyball title. It was a disappointing day for Stella Maris Cadette team who had performed so strong in all their games to reach the final.

Spirits were lifted, however, when Vikki Falconer from Stella Maris was awarded the MVP (most valuable player) award during prize-giving.
