As a racehorse trainer, Pat Flynn’s skills know no bounds and the Co Waterford handler was the toast of local punters at last week’s Galway festival following the success of his horse Bahrain Storm in the €250,000 Arthur Guinness Galway Handicap Hurdle on Thursday, July 30th.
If that wasn’t good enough, Bahrain Storm then followed up by landing the Guinness Race, a conditions event, over one mile six furlongs a little over 24 hours later.
Bahrain Storm was sent off a 20/1 shot for the Galway Hurdle which was somewhat surprising considering that he sluiced home in a two and a half mile conditions hurdle on his previous start at Cork on July 10th. Davy Russell was on board on that occasion, but with the Youghal-born jockey electing to ride fifth-placed Time Electric in the Galway Hurdle, it was Stephen Gray who came in for the ride aboard Bahrain Storm in the Ballybrit feature.
Whilst a mere 22 years of age, Gray gave Bahrain Storm a most polished ride to defeat favourite Deutschland by six lengths with Eoin Griffin’s Lucky Wish a further five and a half lengths adrift in third spot.
