Despite a poor closing round in Dubai Rory McIlroy’s game is in good shape ahead of the US Masters.

ephen Gallacher Rory McIlroy has every reason to be happy with the state of his game as the season begins to get interesting.

He finished tied for second, having suffered a two shot penalty for an infringement at the Abu Dhabi Championship last month and showed he’s right back to form with a dazzling opening 63 in Dubai.

As the Majors approach the Northern Ireland golfer is now as low as 6/1 joint favourite, along with Tiger Woods, to win the Masters at Augusta in a couple of months time.

While McIlroy’s career is very much on an upward trajectory once again sadly the same can’t be said for Padraig Harrington.

If he can’t improve his form dramatically over the next few weeks the triple major winner won’t even be in the field for the Masters and will have to qualify if he is to line up in the US Open at Pinehurst in June.

Harrington ruined a perfect end to his second round at the Phoenix Open in Arizona last weekend with a bogey on the 18th as he missed the cut by a single shot.

That second round included the shot of the day on the par five 13th where Harrington got up and down from a fairway bunker for birdie.

As he faced an 84-yard fairway bunker shot the TV commentator suggested “anything inside 20 feet will be very good from the spot”, Harrington duly hit a majestic shot to three feet and sank the putt for birdie.

Two further birdies followed on the 14th and 17th but an unfortunate bogey on the final hole ensured another missed cut as Harrington desperately continues to try and re-discover the form that took him to three major titles and number three in the world.
