ACEC Ireland Ltd, since taken over by ABB Transformers, was established in 1951
to manufacture small transformers for the ESB rural electrification scheme and grew
to comprise three separate divisions: transformer manufacture and fluorescent lighting in Waterford,

Some of Waterford’s finest players were among the prizewinners in the annual
Munster Express-sponsored competition at Waterford Golf Club in 1972. Club
Captain Dr Tony Lee (second right) presents the winner’s cheque to George Walsh,
who was to win the Senior Scratch Cup the following year. Mr J.J. Walsh (RIP) of
The Munster Express is on the right, while the picture also includes, from left,
Michael O’Brien, Noel Colfer and Nicky Brennan (RIP).
