Waterford Racing Club

The season is only a week old and Waterford Racing Club already has its first win of the domestic season. Saturday’s action was at the Mick Lally Memorial in Summerhill, Co. Meath where talented newcomer Constantin Bartels, capped off some superb teamwork from Mark Whittle, Footer O’Reilly, Mick Finn, David O’Brien and Cian Dwyer, to launch a 60km attack to the finish line with another rider before comprehensively winning the two man sprint to the line.
In the A4 support race it was very nearly another win but Richard Scannell was extremely unlucky to fall victim to mechanical failure in the closing yards of the race whilst away and clear for a certain victory. Nonetheless he still managed to come home in a very fine 6th place.
SP13S2Pic Sunday’s action was also in Co. Meath with the Cycleways Cup in Navan.
This is a big race, the first “classic league” race of the year and once again we were at the business end of things with former National Champion Keith Gater finishing sixth in the elite A1 race and Shane O’Donoghue, a former champion of this race claiming fourth in the A2 category.
Another debutant Kieran Merriman was desperately close to scoring points in the A4 race also, which is testimony to how effective our training program’s are for beginners.
All told, it was another productive weekend for WRC with the club getting into the business end of affairs in virtually every category of every race. Well done to all concerned and those who travelled with the team to provide support.
