Waterford City RFC hosted this extravaganza at their in grounds Kilbarry on Thursday morning last, March 13. The tournament is based on Fair Play, Sportmanship & Participation the onus is on all the players enjoying themselves and taking part.

This was the 1st time that this had been held in Waterford. The 18 schools represented city/county, boys /girls and was a great success with over 280 participants. Each school was allocated a country to represent and carried banners of their country. In the dress parade prior to the competition judging of the schools who best represented their nominated country took place. This was a most colourful display.

Schools that participated include Waterpark N.S., St. Saviours N.S. St. Pauls N.S. St. Declan’s, N.S. Glenbeg N.S., Passage East, Rathgormack N.S., Holy Cross 2 teams, Gael Scoil Philip Barun, Glor Na Mara N.S. Ballygunner N.S. Ballyduff Lower, De La Salle Stephens Street, Gael Scoil Na nDeise. 2 teams. Abbeyside N.S.

The tournament draw created 3 sections with each school playing 4 games. Points were awarded 5 for Win, 3 for Draw, Teamwork (Max 5), Good Conduct (5 max), Sportsmanship (5 max). This system provided all teams even those who had not in the past participated in Tag the opportunity of success. There was over 72 games played on 4 pitches and the skills shown by all players were an eye opener for all in attendance.

This tournament clearly showed that Tag Rugby is a sport that can be enjoyed by all Boys/Girls. It provides each the opportunity of been part of a team and permits each player to show their skills and commitment to their team. Most important is that all the participants had fun and mingled with their opponents. It was wonderfull to see how each team when their game was over go to their opponents and shake hands win or lose.

Of course this would not have taken place without the support of the Teachers who during the games could be heard shouting encouragement to their teams. There were times that they wanted to go out and play themselves. All in the fun of the competition.
