Waterfod City lose to Clonmel
Clonmel 19;Waterford City 17
City traveled to Clonmel on Thursday night last to play a very strong Clonmel under 14 team. This is only the third outing for this City team and again they played a big part in what was a very entertaining game. City had a big squad 19 players in all with all the players being used throughout the game. They were six tries scored three for each team; Clonmel scored their first try in the first half with help of what was a very strong breeze to give them a 5-0 halftime lead. City’s defense in the first half was at times excellent but their inexperience caused them to concede tries that with more games played will improve their defending. City had the advantage of the strong breeze in the second half and used it to their full benefit, when after 5 minutes from restart Chris Kervick scored a great individual try beating several defenders before touching down in the corner.
Keith Moore attempted to make what was very difficult conversion and just shaved the post on the wrong side. The score was now 7pts to 5pts and City were looking good. City’s second try came following persistent pressure on the Clonmel line where they failed to clear their lines and substitute winger Kevin Sinnott who was only on the pitch gathered the ball to score under the post with his first touch of the ball.
Chris Kervick added the conversion to give City a 7-12 lead. The tempo of the game increased even more and Clonmel played some lovely forward play. However good work by the City forwards forced a turn over ball that presented the backs with loads of space which was exploited by Keith Moore who scored in the corner again a good individual try. The score Clonmel 7 City 17 game on.
Clonmel then made some substitutes and they came back into the game and scored under the posts and converted to make the score 14pts to 17pts with 10 minutes to go.
City ran the ball with every opportunity and played some good rugby in very windy conditions but unfortunately they left Clonmel in for the winning score 2mins from the end to give Clonmel the game 19pts to 17pts. This was a very good display from an inexperienced team who are improving with every match played.
