Kilmeaden swimmer Shauna O’Brien set a new Irish Senior record in the 50-metre butterfly at the Dave McCullagh/Swim Ulster International held at the Bangor Aurora in Down last weekend.

The UCD based swimmer broke the previous record of 27.33 seconds held by Melanie Houghton since last April, registering a time of 27.10.

Her winning time was under the qualification standard of 27.14 for the World University Games which will be held in Gwangju South Korea in July.

Over 350 swimmers from 60 clubs including 10 foreign clubs competed in 32 individual and six team events across three days of competition.

She continued her winning ways with a time of 1.00:54 to take gold in the 100m fly where her time was just one hundredth of a second shy of the existing Irish Senior Record.

O’Brien’s good form comes on the back of international success at the Swedish Grand Prix in January where she also won the 50m fly and was second in the 100m fly.
