Whittle’s wonder goal

DavidWhittleNine-man Bohemians recorded an amazing Premier league success over Villa at Connor’s Park on Saturday night last thanks to a 50-yard free kick from David Whittle with 14 minutes remaining in the contest.

David Kennedy gave Bohs the lead with a cracking 25-yard strike on 22 minutes but the lead only lasted a couple of minutes as Paul Omoteso scored a fine goal from inside the penalty area before the visitors had both Leo Jacques and Gerry Connors sent off by referee Tony Walsh.

After Villa failed to create chances, a needless foul by David Murphy on David Kennedy saw Whittle stand over a free kick just five yards into the opposition half and with Villa keeper Dean Purcell in no man’s land, the defender went for goal and found the net in amazing style.

Meanwhile, a lone goal from Keith Sheridan helped in-form Waterford Crystal to victory over a Southend United side that are now in serious trouble at the foot of the table, while the other game between St Saviour’s and Johnville was called off due to a frozen pitch.
