It’s hard to know what to make of Robbie Keane’s loan move to Celtic. He obviously wasn’t going to get a look-in under Harry Redknapp, even though, like a certain Chelsea player, they can’t score at home at the minute, so he plainly decided he’d rather play than just sit at Spurs and collect his stg£68K a week.

Running out at Parkhead is “a dream” (after their first preference perhaps) for most Republic of Ireland players, but in the long term Keane needs — and wants — to be in the English Premier League. The same could be said of Celtic.

If Brian Kerr’s former assistant Chris Hughton takes Newcastle up, as looks likely after equalling a half-century-old 15-game unbeaten record, don’t be surprised if the nomadic Dubliner’s next stop is St James’s Park.
