Top Gun

Fifteen year old Eli Dunphy, son of Waterford Entrepreneur Martin Dunphy and grandson of Nellie and former Blues keeper Vincent Dunphy, won the Australian National Championship in Double Barrel in Wagga Wagga, Australia at the end of last month with a perfect score.
Eli was the only shooter in all categories from the Northern Hemisphere to win a Championship.
In the 13th World Championships, also held in Australia, Eli was the highest scoring junior (under 21) on the Irish team and made it to the finals. He had a 95.6 per cent scoring rate, making him the best class ‘A’ junior at the Worlds in addition to the seventh best class ‘A’ shooter overall. He was the youngest member of the 10 member strong Irish team which included seniors, ladies and juniors. It was Eli’s fourth time shooting for Ireland. In all there were over 750 shooters taking part in the Championships from 15 countries.

Eli attends Georgetown Preparatory School in Maryland, United States. His home shooting ground is Winchester Gun Club in Virginia.
When in Ireland, Eli spends much of his summers and time off practising at Bishops Mountain Shooting Ground in South Kilkenny, where his potential as a shooter was spotted several years ago by Gene Murphy of Huntin &Fishin, Ballybricken, who runs the shooting ground.
Eli won the British Open for his age group last summer and also won a silver medal at the European Championships in Scotland and plans to be equally busy this summer.
He intends to shoot at the Krieghoff Challenge in the United Kingdom in May and at the European Championships in Wales later on in the summer.
While DTL (Down the Line) is the discipline shot at the World Championships in Australia, trap shooting is an Olympic sport and one that Eli is a prospect for. Certainly Eli Dunphy is a young talent, delivering on his potential and a name to look out for in the future.
