Waterford Castle and Golf Club celebrates local hero

N24N25S1PicAWaterford Castle and Golf Resort is celebrating the achievements of local golfer Kevin Phelan.

The 23-year-old will pay in the European Tour next season after claiming his card in the final qualifying event in Spain last month.

All associated with the picturesque island golf club are thrilled with Kevin’s achievements.

James Funnell of Waterford Castle Golf Club said everyone was extremely proud of the golfer’s achievements.

The fact that Kevin has retained such a strong link with Waterford is something which has endeared him even more to club members and local people.

“Everyone loves him. He’s always in contact with the club,” said James.

“Whenever he’s back in Ireland he’ll come and play here. Sometimes it’s once a year, sometimes it’s four or five times a year. Now that he’s going to be based in Europe it will probably be a lot more.”

James continued: “Even when he left for the States, he never lost the connection to Waterford Castle. Some of his best friends still play here. He has always said this is his home course. When he was playing in his college tournaments he kept promoting the place. All of a sudden he’s then promoting us during the US Open, saying he’s from Waterford, Ireland and Waterford Castle. He always says ‘I am from Waterford’ as he’s proud of where he came from.”

Kevin received an honorary membership of the club two years ago.

“There’s only ever been one other person who’s had honorary membership here,” explained James.

James believes Kevin’s achievements will continue to give great hope to young golfers.

“They can see that he’s from here and he can do that. It’s not miracle golf he’s playing – it’s consistent golf,” he said.

“He’s a nice guy who never stops smiling. He’s a young guy but he acts beyond his years. That’s what impresses me most. People are supportive of him because he wants to represent Ireland and Waterford.”

James described Waterford Castle Golf Club as a “real family club”.

With six green keepers employed, it’s no wonder the course always looks in pristine condition.

The club currently has over 400 members and is offering a special membership rate of €800 for 12 months at present.

“You’re on a private island so it’s quiet. You get onto the back of the course and it’s just you and the deer,” said James.

The golf clubhouse can be hired for private parties.
