Last Saturday week saw the second day of play in the Cork Mixed Recreational Volleyball League hosted by CIT Volleyball Club, Bishopstown. This league is being played over 5 dates with 9 teams involved, all with league title ambitions.
Waterford is very well represented in this year’s competition with two teams vying for league honours – namely, Deise Tigers and Made in Europe (pictured), both from Waterford City clubs.
Made in Europe got off to a perfect start on the first day of play, taking maximum points and came into the second day top of the table.
Day two’s fixtures brought many exciting and closely-contested matches with all teams putting in a much-improved performance.
Made in Europe’s first match of the day was against local rivals Deise Tigers. Made in Europe used their strong attack to good effect and denied the Tigers scoring opportunities with some excellent defensive play.
They won the game 2 sets to 0 and continued their good form throughout the day beating both UCC and Grasshoppers in the same manner. With Made in Europe again taking maximum points from the day it was up to their closet opponents to clock up as many set points as possible and keep them in their sights.
Cork’s Bishopstown are in 2nd place overall in the league, just one point behind the leaders. Youghal improved greatly on their first-day position, with wins over UCC, Deise Tigers and last year’s league winners VBAK to climb to 4th place overall.
The Glanmire-based Rebels were too strong for the Grasshoppers and Deise Tigers. They did however fall at the hands of Bishopstown in a very close game, with Bishopstown just having the edge.
So it was a day of mixed fortunes for the Waterford sides. Made in Europe continue to enjoy their top of the table position. The Deise Tigers lie in 8th place overall and will be eager to improve on that placing over the remaining 3 rounds of fixtures at CIT Bishopstown on March 8th, 29th and April 12th.
