New giant signs have been erected on the Ring Road and Long finger lane to prevent visitors from going astray but the Lilliput sign remains in place at the Branch Road junction. With so many still going up the road in the wrong direction the barrier outside the Tramore House gates has returned (now dubbed Legoland).

Until common sense prevails and cul-de-sac is painted on the road surface it has been suggested that the powers that be take a leaf out of the railway history book and put in a turntable to aid unhappy visitors get back on track.

Gaelic Football

On Thursday 22nd the first year gaelic football team played two games against Kilmacthomas. CBS Tramore was victorious in the first game but were defeated in the second by a goal and a point. On Tuesday 26th CBS Tramore will play against Dungarvan CBS in the under 14 football A. Under 14 training takes place on Tuesdays at 4:15 pm. First years will take part in a Munster development blitz on May 7th.

Retreat

On Tuesday April 20th transition year students travelled to the Edmund Rice centre in Waterford for their annual retreat.

State Exams

Third and sixth year students are busy at the moment with a number of oral and practical examinations taking place. Irish, French, German and Spanish oral examinations have already taken place. A number of practical examinations and projects including Music, Science, Religion, CSPE, Woodwork and Metalwork have taken place or will take place in the coming weeks.

No Uniform Day

On Friday April 16th the school held a no uniform day to raise funds for the Niall Mellon Partnership Trust fund. This is an organisation that provides housing for those in need in South Africa. A number of parents of students in CBS Tramore are part of this worthy charity.

Open Day

On Friday 23rd a number of fifth year and transition year students travelled to Cork, accompanied by Mr. Walsh and Mr. Kenny, for the UCC open day. They will get a guided tour of the campus and information on the various courses provided by the university.

Hurling

Last week Tramore CBS recorded a superb victory over Blackwater College in the final of the U15 ½ Waterford Schools Hurling championship. The lovely location of Fraher Field and the ideal summer conditions combined to produce a high standard of skilful hurling from both teams. The early dominance of Tramore did not produce the scores they deserved but when Shane McNulty found his range they led at half time by ten points. With the aid of the wind in the second half Blackwater rallied but the character and spirit of this Tramore CBS became evident as they increased the tempo to carve out a notable win and become county schools champion for 2010. Although this was a complete team performance there were exceptional individual displays from Conor Rockett, Barry Whelan, John Hutchinson, Matthew Thompson, Brian Murray and of course Shane McNulty who scored 3.8. Others to work hard were Jason O Shea, Sean Colfer, Sam Lenihan, Adam Dunne, Cathal Dower and Geoff McCarthy who was most reliable in goal. Ann Hogan presented to the captain, Shane McNulty, who thanked Mr. Kenny and Mr. Williams for their work with the team and praised Blackwater College for a fine sporting match. This is the team that will take part in the U 16 ½ Munster championship next year and as there were 5 injured players missing there will be intense competition for places so all must make a big effort in training in September.

Br. Tom Walsh (De La Salle Brothers) coordinator of this project thanked Monsignor Olden and Monsignor Shine for giving him the opportunity to speak at all the weekend masses in Holy Cross Church.

Br. Tom Walsh (De La Salle Brothers) coordinator of this project thanked Monsignor Olden and Monsignor Shine for giving him the opportunity to speak at all the weekend masses in Holy Cross Church. He had spent much of his life in Waterford and played many basketball and Gaelic matches in Tramore. For the last two years he has been working in a very poor area of India. Prior to that over the years he took many volunteers to Africa for six weeks during the summer, including the following from Tramore: Aoife Rush who also went back as a leader, her brother Barry rush and Clare Rush, Annette Curry and her sister Elaine Curry, Tommy Partridge who went back several times to Ethiopia himself, Linda rice, Diarmuid McCarthy, Triona McCarthy, Bob Halley, Kate Canty, Brian Noughton, Clare King. They built primary schools, crèches and women’s promotional centres. There were no roads, no proper water supply or electricity on tap but these volunteers were brilliant.

This year there are twelve volunteers from all over Ireland going to Keesara, India, including Denise and Clare Cully, Tramore. They hope to build twenty-seven classrooms as the foundations have already started. What would cost up to €5,000,000 here will cost €120,000 in India. In the schools are Hindus, Muslims and very few Christians. The volunteers work on the building site, carrying blocks, bricks, stones and water, whatever is needed. A bricklayer in India is paid €5 per day, labourers get €1.50 (men) and €1.20 (women). Some of the volunteers are teachers and will teach in the De La Salle School which opened thirteen years ago. They will teach basic mathematics, English, help slow learners, teach music and art. The small things help and count in Africa and India. Those volunteers will be changed forever and when they visit the villages they will begin to see how lucky we are in Ireland.

Br.Tom appreciated the volunteers giving up a month of their summer to work on the project and felt sure that most of them will want to go back. They will be changed forever as a result of their trip to India. He asked for prayers for the success of the project and for the safety of the volunteers and hoped that somewhere in the congregation there was a volunteer that would come with them next year.

He stated that every cent donated in the collection taken up after Mass would go directly out to India. He had a pleasant surprise at the last mass on Sunday when he renewed acquaintances with Bishop Patrick Sheehan with whom he worked for one year in Nigeria.

“Live God in our hearts forever.”

In July 1921 patrons of the old Ballroom of Romance were well catered for with the erection of a monster marquee on the seafront. The well appointed wooden floor was highly praised as was the resident orchestra from Cork under the baton of Professor Collins, School of Music, Cork.

May 1940 was a red letter month for Tramore when local rate payers were astounded to learn that there would be a reduction in the rates by one shilling and six pence in the town land of Ballycarnane, Crobally Upper, Tramore East and Tramore West. A cut of one shilling ten pence halfpenny was granted to Crobally Lower, Newtown (Islandkeane) and a most interesting one – Tramore Burrow.
