It’s quite rare that the beautiful, and sometimes life-changing, world of cinema arrives on the shores of Tramore.

It’s quite rare that the beautiful, and sometimes life-changing, world of cinema arrives on the shores of Tramore. One of those rarities will present itself courtesy of those good folks in Transition Town Tramore (T3) very soon. So what’s the lowdown? Well, it’s totally free to start. That’s right – no dosh required. At 8pm on Thursday, 11th of March, at O’ Shea’s Hotel, Tramore, T3 will screen the groundbreaking The Age of Stupid starring the renowned Pete Postlethwaite (In the Name of the Father, Usual Suspects).

Pete has described the film as “refreshing and startling”. In addition he stated, “I think there will be more people coming out of that film who will go ‘man oh man, that was really moving, exciting, what do we do?’ And that’s the kind of feeling we want to get out of it and I think the majority of people will think that.”

It is very possible that this is one of those films that your kids will be glad you took the time to see and absorb. It may well be seen by some as a gift from the future. The film was originally released last year to great critical acclaim. Set in the year 2055, The Age of Stupid looks back to the present day. In it, the Oscar-nominated actor stars as a future survivor of the 21st century’s climate apocalypse, who looks back on the present through documentary footage and asks why humanity failed to save itself from a predictable catastrophe.

There is a powerful concept called intergenerational equity, a bit of a mouthful, you may think. It simply means that future generations (i.e our children and grandchildren) should have equal right and access to the conditions which we currently enjoy. Climate change could seriously deny them that access. Do them proud and come and see this excellent premiere.

The second Kav Fest took place last weekend in Tramore. The event moved to August this year from July, when it replaced the annual Tra Fest.

Again the weather man proved kind on both the Saturday and Sunday.

Up to 1500 people were estimated to be at the closing band on the Sunday, Ska Rude who played cover music from bands like Madness, the Specials etc. They proved really popular and had the young people clapping their hands and dancing on Strand St. above Ladies slip.

The organisers of the festival June and Geno Kavanagh joined their son, Owen, on stage, with the ska group and thanked the audience for coming along as well as the local sponsors O’Shea’s, Tommy Bohan’s of Cuil Tra, Murphs and the HiB.

Earlier Dublin Band – Blood or Whiskey played, on the style of the Pogues, they had plenty of loud raunchy numbers. Rising in stature they supported the famous Pogues in New York gigs this year. Hard to make out the lyrics on first hearing again they had the crowd rocking.

One of the more amusing songs they played was called “There is a Poxy Pub in my Neighbourhood.”

Prior to them Shane Barry and The Distractions played some nice brass and jazz style.

Ghetto Armaretto, a local Waterford band, played earlier on the street and afterwards in the Baldy Man, many of the bands eventually played in local pubs after their gigs.

On Saturday, they had a lovely sunny day for the stage, in the Baldy Man car park.

Competing with Ladies Day at Tramore Races and other events and gigs like Andy Irvine the numbers were not as strong, but still there was good music on offer.

Waterford star Katie Kim was one of the performers at around 6.30pm, she was followed by Black Robots Myp et Jeep.

Orphan Code performed for the final slot at 9.15pm. They have played in America and produced a record in San Francisco and have been on national radio and TV in Ireland.

Geno promised another Kav Fest next year.

They got a great round of applause for bringing live music on the street to Tramore from the townspeople for their efforts.

Well done for the clean up afterwards.

The summer workshops consisted of violins, drummers, guitarists, keyboard players and vocalists.

The summer workshops consisted of violins, drummers, guitarists, keyboard players and vocalists.

Pupils were formed in small workshops and then together to make an electric orchestra. Ages 9 to 15 years.

A fun packed week with a performance on Friday for friends and families.

This is year two of summer workshops in the Club which are proving to be very successful.

We owe most of our thanks to Margaret Organ, W.C.C. Arts Officer. They fund the workshops and much more helping with equipment, drama and many other projects within the Club.

We would not be able to run many of our projects without the help of Margaret and the arts who has supported us for many years.

It is important that parents are aware of the help we receive and hopefully government will see just how important it is to keep funding small clubs like ourselves who would find it extremely difficult to manage without support from Margaret and the Arts Department. Cutting Arts funding would be disastrous.

Well done again all the pupils who attended the workshop and played amazingly and to the tutors who worked with the group for the week.
