Having come from behind twice and then to see Vinny Sullivan score the winner in injury time, the Waterford United manager Gareth Cronin found it hard to hide his disappointment at the display by his full strength side.

The previous week they had lost to Dundalk with a weakened team so many thought a strong United team would deal easily enough with the bottom club in the league but things did not turn out that way. “It was an extraordinary game in many ways but we were very poor all through the game. We did not play at all but I felt we were very unlucky not to have got a draw in Dundalk and sometimes these things even themselves out during the course of the season.

“Strong words were said at half-time and although we did improve somewhat in the second half we were still rather sloppy. Michael Foley took two excellent free kicks and Kenny [Browne] thankfully was on the end of both, something he has been working at training.

“David Breen played a super ball over their defence to set up the winner for Vinny Sullivan and I have to give the lads credit for keeping going right to the death”, said Cronin.

He also paid tribute to substitute Joe Mulcahy who looked impressive for the second week running when he cam on during the course of the second half. “Joe came to the club just to train during the close season and I could see he had determination and a will to get on in the game and he has proved that during the past two weeks and perhaps he has played himself into the starting eleven for the Shelbourne game next Friday.

“In many ways he turned this game on its head tonight with his strong running down the right flank. Four players returned from injury and suspension tonight and I had to think long and hard about putting them all back in and a few of then looked rusty but hopefully they will be back to form in Tolka Park for the game with Shels.

“We will get hard games here this season and that was one of them. Sporting Fingal and Limerick were easy but if we can lose only for or five games we will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. Having said that our performance tonight, especially in the first half was not good enough and not acceptable to the fans who pay good money to come and watch us”.
