Ballyduff Upper collected a second brace of points in the Snowcream County Senior Hurling Championship on Saturday last when they had a seven-point win over Abbeyside at Cappoquin.
Heavy underground conditions meant that the game failed to rise to the high expectations some may have had.
Many were left frustrated by the stop-start nature of the play and while it was not a dirty game, the fact that 16 of the 29 scores registered came from frees told much of the story.
For over half an hour either side of the break a goal from the stick of Ballyduff and Waterford captain Stephen Molumphy was the main difference between the sides.
Eight minutes into the game the army officer found himself in acres of space unmarked in the Abbeyside half of the field, something that Brian Kearney spotted when he looked up while in possession, and when he laid the ball off Molumphy gave Daryl Ryan in the Abbeyside goal no chance with a well executed shot from about 30 metres, helped his side to a 1-8 to 0-8 lead at the break.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Ballyduff held a two-point lead but it was at this stage that the game went pair-shaped from an Abbeyside perspective. The Hurney brothers Patrick and Gary linked up for the former to shoot at goal but what appeared to be a certain goal for Abbeyside went wide of the near post and after this what confidence Abbeyside had began to disappear.
