These sides entered this game at Fraher Field on Sunday last in contrasting form.
Fourmilewater entered with a rich vein of forum having secured their place in the last eight with a late win over a fancied Abbeyside while De La Salle entered the fray off the back of a 15-point drubbing at the hands of Ballygunner.
But at the end of an hour’s hurling it was the city side that were the happier of the duo as they returned to winning ways courtesy of a 10-point victory.
The difference between the sides on the scoreboard could suggest that there was a large gulf between the sides.
However when you learn that Fourmilewater started minus Shane and Martin Walsh, Brian Wall and Michael O’Gorman, then you’re halfway towards explaining the double digit deficit between the sides by full-time. Nevertheless, De La Salle fully merited their win.
While the westerners were first to score through Seamus Lawlor inside 60 seconds, the team managed by Michael Ryan were full value for their 0-12 to 0-6 half-time lead.
While John Mullane was his team’s top scorer, five of his six points came from frees, which can be put down to the close attention paid to him by the superb Justin Walsh.
Putting Mullane on free taking duty may have been a ploy by the De La Salle selectors to bring their sharp shooting forward into the game after hitting over some frees.
