Division 1A outfit De La Salle defeated Division 2B side St Paul’s on Sunday morning in what was an extraordinary contest. The goals flowed freely during a game which produced some wonderful entertainment. St Paul’s gave Premier League team Tramore a great game a few weeks previously in the FAI Junior Cup while last week De La Salle made their exit from that competition when they lost to Piltown. Star of the show was De La Salle striker Andy Howard. He scored four goals and also had a hand in the other three and his pace up front was too much for the St Paul’s defenders. He is the top scorer in the Third Division, and surely he should be playing at the higher grade with the club.
Quick goals
The action came thick and fast during the opening 45 minutes. Both sides had chances to score before the deadlock was broken after 22 minutes. Walter Kennedy, the St Paul’s midfield player picked out Matthew Meredith and he cracked the ball to the DLS net from just inside the penalty area.
The Saints held their advantage for only one minute however. Darren O’Loughlin split the St Paul’s defence and Brian Staunton hammered the ball past Joey Foran from the right side of the penalty area.
