The talented young footballers of Southend United left Southend Park on Sunday afternoon last wondering how they had failed to book a place in the final of the FAI Under-17 Cup. They completely dominated the game but they lost out to the Cork outfit who had just one shot on goal throughout but that lone strike was enough to win the game for the visitors. The match was played under a beautiful April sun, in front of a large crowd, but sadly it was not Southend’s day due to their inability to put away the chances that came their way.
Prior to the game a minute’s silence was observed because just before kick-off the news came through from Clonmel that the Southend United President, Fr Nicholas Power had passed away. The club flag of tangerine and white was flown at half mast as a result.
Early on Mark Phelan of Southend met a free kick taken by Paddy Barrett but he headed over the crossbar. Carrigline almost fell behind on 13 minutes. Mark Phelan got a shot in from the right which the visiting goalkeeper Patrick O’Flynn turned over the top. Glen Hawe took the resultant corner from the right, Paddy Barrett got on to the end of it but his shot was hacked off the line by defender David Kinsella.
The only goal of the game arrived on 18 minutes. Andrew Healy squared to Chris O’Callaghan who let fly from 35 yards. Southend goalkeeper Dale Sheridan was slightly off his line and the ball flew into the roof of the net.
