Waterford haven’t put in all the hard graft in recent years just to see it all come to nought in Division Three. They may be 25/1 outsiders for promotion, but John Owens’ men will not be easily beaten this spring. | Photo: Michael Kiely

The serious stuff begins this Sunday for Waterford’s footballers when they make the short trip to Wexford Park to take on Jason Ryan’s Model side in their National League opener.

This promises to be a real mouth-watering encounter as the two near neighbours go head to head in what promises to be a ding-dong encounter.

Both of these teams will probably acknowledge that they are not going to win the All-Ireland title and therefore that the League is probably their priority for 2011.

However, that may well be where their similarities end. While Waterford would be happy with survival in Division Three, Wexford will be one of the teams looking to win promotion to the next grade.
