As most mortals back home were struggling to stay on their feet, Dungarvan teenager Kate Veale came through the snow-covered course in Gransha, Co Derry to win the Woodie’s DIY All-Ireland girls under-18 cross-country championship in superb style last Sunday, as did Ferrybank’s man for all seasons, Shane Quinn, in the male junior race.
West Waterford AC starlet Kate is one of the country’s top race walking prospects, having set seven national records and finished fourth at the World Youth Olympics in Singapore this year alone. But as she’s shown before and again last weekend, the St Augustine’s College student can put her ‘foot up’ with the best of them too.
