Mount Sion 3-16; Lismore 2-13
Mount Sion, minus the services of Tony Browne because of Tonsillitis, Ian O’Regan due to a shoulder injury and Michael Gaffney on account of flu, recorded a six-point win over Lismore in the fourth series of games of this year’s senior hurling championship at Fraher Field on Saturday last.
Going on this result Jim Greene’s charges, having played a relegation game last year under different management, will have to be considered as one of the teams in with a very serious shout of winning the title later in the year.
Mount Sion were the better side in the early exchanges and by the midway mark of the opening half, thanks to Ken McGrath, Paul Hammond, Ian Galgey and man-of-the-match Martin O’Neill, they’d raced into a 0-6 to 0-2 lead, Lismore’s scores coming from Maurice Shanahan and Kevin Power.
Points from Dan Shanahan and Padraig Prendergast followed for Lismore to cut ‘Sion’s lead to two points, and when Dan Shanahan set up Chris Shanahan for a goal Lismore were a point up with 18 minutes played.
County Minor stars from the past two years, Maurice Shanahan and Martin O’Neill, then added four points between them for their respective sides before Ross O’Keeffe pointed for Mount Sion with five minutes of the half remaining to leave the minimum between the teams.
