09shopATentative steps are being taken towards the development of a scaled-down shopping centre on a site once earmarked for a massive retail complex in the heart of the city. Preliminary discussions have already taken place regarding a clean-up of the derelict site, which is bordered by New Street, Michael Street, Alexander Street and Stephen Street. And NAMA, which owns much of the land, has apparently acknowledged that the site has a long-term viability which could justify moving forward with some form of development, albeit on a smaller scale than was originally envisaged.
KRM Construction Partnership first lodged a planning application with Waterford City Council back in 2006 for a €280m development that, it said, would create 1,300 jobs on completion and over 600 during construction.
