A Christmas Fair will be held on Mooncoin on Friday next, December 12th, promoting local produce while raising funds for the South African charity established by local farmer John Crowley.
The Centra store owned by Michael and Alice Blanchfield will play host to the event, which will run between 3 and 7pm.
“We’re really looking forward to the day and we hope we’re going to get a good reaction from locals to the fair, which is something we’ve been planning for quite a while,” said Michael Blanchfield.
“Since we decided to host a Christmas fair, we figured that we should run it in conjunction with a fundraising venture.
“John Crowley’s work in South Africa is well-known in the area, I’ve subscribed myself to it since day one and we thought it would be a good idea to throw open our doors to John for the day.”
A bag-pack during the fair will benefit the Cape Town-based Women in Need group (WIN) whose work is supported by donors primarily drawn from South Kilkenny, East Waterford and South Tipperary.
So why hold a fair like this? “We want to encourage people in the area to shop locally,” added Michael.
“The fair offers us an opportunity to illustrate the quality of the local produce that we sell in our store. We’ll have tastings on the day – turkeys, hams, cakes, mulled wines, etc and a lot more besides.”
The grand slam of trophies claimed by Kilkenny’s all-conquering hurling heroes will be on display on the day, and a few special guests are also expected at the event.
“We hope the fair will act as a reminder to Mooncoin shoppers that there is great choice and quality available to them in their own town,” said Michael.
Leaflets promoting the event shall be distributed in the Mooncoin area over the next few days.
