The fall of the Government was inevitable. Their communications last week was deplorable. Can they hold on and pass a budget? Will some opposition parties abstain to ensure a budget is passed and then have an election?
That would be the better option given the fragility of the economy. The flight of money from banks in the autumn led to the European Central Bank intervening. The IMF and ECB rescue may not be the panacea for our ills.
Last week, Brian Lenihan, our Finance Minister, finally admitted that the bank liabilities were too big for a country or economy like Ireland.
