We write this article in Christmas week, a week that will see many schools obliged to keep their pupils in class until the 23rd December. This is due to the many days ‘lost’ as a result of the recent snow. Some Primary School principals want pupils back early in January in an effort to make up the lost time. Some forward planning should be in place to deal with these type of situations as there seems to be a lack of organisation and guidelines re bad weather days.
For instance, when is there an emergency as opposed to difficult weather? Perhaps our local authorities spend too much effort on main roads and ignore school areas where road access is also very important. Some schools in the middle of the bad weather got help from parents in clearing snow and ice and that has to be highly commended.
