We are getting some attention on the Waterford Crystal situation with the Tanaiste meeting with a delegation last week that included the Mayor of Waterford, City Manager and members of the Chamber of Commerce.

While no specific commitments were given, the Tanaiste did let it be known that she is watching matters carefully as KPS and Clarion are involved in negotiations to buy the firm from the receivers. Will the Government purchase the visitor centre and factory from the Bank of America, who hold these as security?

This would be a better outcome for Waterford as it could secure a continuity of business there in the form of some productions and a visitor trail. The Tourism Industry badly needs a lift in the South East. Many in the sector are really suffering and if bad news comes in March it will be a dreadful blow and will add more onto the unemployment figures as confidence is hit in this sector.

The Tanaiste must be aware of the consequences of failing to assist in securing the future of Waterford Crystal in Ireland. More lobbying may be needed in the coming weeks when the outcome of the ownership of the company is clear and the Receiver is no longer in the picture.
