Since Tuesday of this week, all roads have been leading to Athy, County Kildare since Tuesday for what is one of Ireland’s biggest annual events: the National Ploughing Championships.
Now in its 80th year ‘The Ploughing’ never fails to attract the crowds and this year shall be no different with around 180,000 people expected to have thronged to this year’s site by Thursday evening.
With so many different stands, exhibitors and activities to see and choose from and to see, anyone from a farming background might feel akin to a child in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.
However, despite what some traditionalists may think, the ploughing and the agricultural aspects occupy very minor roles in the overall spectrum of the event.
