Bonmahon Health CentreLAST week I reported on the closure of Bonmahon Health Centre which signalled another significant blow for the tranquil seaside village. Local woman Mary Galvin, who was caretaker at the centre for 34 years, invited me to visit on Monday of last week when it closed its doors for the final time.
Despite extremely inclement conditions, but in a real show of community spirit, many locals turned out to mark the closure and to enjoy some tea, coffee, biscuits and cake provided by some of the local ladies.Although its level of usage had declined somewhat in recent times, the health centre still played an important part in the life of the historic village.
The decision to close it was somewhat inevitable considering the many unsuccessful attempts which had been made at seeking an upgrade to the centre. The building which housed the health centre was extremely unsuitable for its purpose.
