I loved the story last week about the Rathvilly, County Carlow, woman who died in 2009 and is ‘haunting’ her home every day but in a way that her family thoroughly approves of and enjoys!
When the family uses the term ‘haunt’ they are taking poetic licence but they do so with affection and humour. The Larkin family operates a pet-shop in Baltinglass and the late Mrs Elizabeth Larkin owned three Yellow-Crowned Amazon Cockatoos that were very attached to her. It is a trait of such birds that they imitate the voice of the person who coaches them to repeat phrases and one of the birds, in particular, is uncanny in its likeness to its deceased owner’s voice.
