Readers of a certain age will be saddened to hear of the death of actor James McArthur who is best remembered as the sidekick to Detective Steve McGarret (Jack Lord) in the iconic televisions series, ‘Hawaii 5-0’, or, as it was once famously referred to on RTE, ‘Hawaii Five-Nil’.

At the end of every programme, which had a very distinctive theme tune, the baddies would be rounded up and McGarrett would look at them contemptuously before instructing his colleague to ‘Book ‘em Danno’. It was one of the most famous television catch-phrases that entered everyday speak. The only others to compare were Bunny Carr’s ‘Stop the Lights’ and the drink advertisement featuring Vicki Michelle (later to star in ‘Allo ‘Allo on the BBC) as Sally O’Brien ‘and the way she might look at you’.

The son of playwright Charles MacArthur and actress Helen Hayes, MacArthur had a long career in film and television spanning six decades but his most recognizable role was as Detective Danny Williams in Hawaii Five-O. He was 72 years old. May he rest in peace.
