Strange game football! Waterford United had 80 per cent of the play in Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night last but Wexford Youths created 80 per cent of the chances created.
That fact sums up the current form of Waterford United in the league. No goals scored in their last three games and although their defence is as tight as ever (especially goalkeeper, Michael Devine) things are not happening for Waterford in the final third of the park.
Wexford Youths are perhaps the hardest team in the division to break down. They bring back all 10 outfield players at every opportunity, and when their opponents fail to break through they race forward with pace.
That happened on a number of occasions last Friday and were it not for the brilliance of Devine the Blues could have easily lost this game.
The result means that Waterford are now two points behind Sporting Fingal and UCD (Fingal beat the students 1-0 on Friday) and seven behind the leaders Shelbourne who won away in Monaghan.
Next up for Waterford in the league is a home game against Shelbourne (if the FAI Cup game is not drawn) followed by an away game against Athlone Town. There is still a very long way to go and no doubt there will be a lot of twists and turns during the coming months and at least a play-off place is still very much on the cards for Stephen Henderson’s men.
