Kerry League 1; Waterford United

(Kerry won 3-2 on pens, AET)

Waterford made the long journey to Mounthawk Park in Tralee on Easter Monday for a first round game in the League Cup.

The Blues were keen to record a win after drawing two league games on the trot but got off to the worst possible start when Chris Kearns put the Kingdom outfit in front after 30 minutes. Waterford equalised 3 minutes later when Kenny Browne scored inside a crowded six yards. Just before that David Hayes had the ball in the Waterford net but it was ruled out for offside.

The remainder of normal time produced no further goals despite the fact that Gareth Cronin brought on first-choice players Dave Warren, Kevin Waters and Paul McCarthy. Thirty minutes extra-time also failed to produce a goal.

Kerry won the penalty shoot-out 3-2. Willie John Kiely and Gary Dunphy scored for United but Robbie Clarke, Dave Warren and Michael Foley missed.

Kerry ‘keeper David Hennessy saved all three Blues penalties and also scored Kerry’s first spot-kick.
