Five amateur theatre and musical societies in Chelmsford have united in an attempt to take over the management of the town’s council-run theatres. This arose when these companies had cause to be concerned with the way they were treated when they wanted to hire the Civic Theatre and its smaller sister venue The Cramphorn. Following a meeting with the council’s leader and a further discussion with the Local Authority’s Director of Leisure, a proposal was made that five organisations should start to be involved with the management of the venues.

This would have been music to the ears of the late Larry Fanning who ran the Theatre Royal successfully with a voluntary committee for many years.
