Villa 1; Waterford Crystal 2

The opening 45 minutes did not produce any goals. The home side did go close through Des Mullett after 37 minutes but Crystal ‘keeper Derek Hearne produced a fine save. Robbie Butler, who enjoyed a fine game on the left wing for the visitors created the opening goal on 57 minutes when he got in a fine cross which was met on the run by Paul Quilty, who lashed the ball past helpless Villa goalkeeper Liam Kavanagh from just inside the penalty area.

Keith Sheridan made it 2-0 on 72 minutes. The Villa right full Conor Mullane tripped Robbie Butler inside the penalty area and Sheridan sent Kavanagh the wrong way from spot.

Conor McDonald also scored from the spot for the Villa two minutes from full time. Almost twelve minutes’ stoppage time had to be played due to a terrible clash of heads between Keith Sheridan and the Villa midfield player Nicky Corcoran, but try as they might the Villa could not grab an equaliser.
