‘Supports and Developments in Mental Health Care’ is the theme of a major conference which will take place in Dungarvan this weekend.
Organised by Cllr Liam Brazil (FG), with the support of Waterford City & County Council, the conference at The Park Hotel is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend to hear from a range of different speakers.
This is the third such conference that has been organised in Dungarvan by Cllr Liam Brazil, and it has now become a very successful bi-annual event.
Cllr Brazil believes that an event of this type provides a very important forum to address the stigma that he feels still surrounds the issues of mental health and suicide in our society.
“Unfortunately, suicide and mental health issues seem to be touching the lives of more and more people, as the pressures of modern society, financial and otherwise, become too much to bear for many,” he said.
“I hope that this conference will allow people to speak openly about, or simply listen to the experiences of others and make them aware of the wide range of help that is out there for anyone faced with mental health issues. People need to know that they are not alone.”
Cllr Brazil himself will officiate at the official opening at 7pm on Friday evening 19th February and this event will feature three guest speakers: Olympic boxer Kenneth Egan, founder of Waterford Health Park Dr Mark Rowe; and Sr. Gertrude Howley of GROW.
There will be a busy schedule of guest speakers throughout Saturday, including: Ann Barron, Director of the Waterford & South East Samaritans; Caroline McGuigan of Suicide or Survive and Cavan GAA player Alan O’Mara.
