A request by the Waterford senior hurling management to have the third round of games in this year’s Lawlors Hotel County Senior Football Championship called off was turned down at the last meeting of Waterford County Board.
Deise boss Davy Fitzgerald, who has seven players from his panel expected to play in the third round of the senior championship on June 26th/27th, had voiced concerns that the games came too close to the July 11th Munster Hurling Final.
Club delegates however were not prepared to agree with the Sixmilebridge man’s point of view.
The Tallow delegate at the meeting pointed out that there was two weeks between the games and that it was not a “do or die” game.
The Abbeyside/Ballinacourty delegate at the meeting also said that the game should not be called off “under any circumstances”.
County Secretary Timmy O’Keeffe agreed that games should not be called off. The Clashmore clubman said that calling off games would mean that Waterford would miss out on its county final dates if the board were to start giving postponements at this stage.
He also pointed out that there was a number of dual senior clubs, adding that some of them could be playing for several weeks in a row. “If postponements were to be given now, how fair would that be?” the secretary asked.
