The loss of the Waterford city to Rosslare Europort railway service to users at either end of the line has been starkly evidenced during this record breaking cold snap.
“There is absolutely no question that the old Irish Rail service would have been full every day over the past week were it still being operated,” said a Rail Users Ireland source.
“Of course, you have to make allowance for the severity of the conditions during the worst of the wintry weather, but on a day like Tuesday, for example, when the road between Waterford and New Ross and beyond Ross remained treacherous, many would have opted for the train were the service still available.”
Rail enthusiast Bernard Allan, citing the cancellation of the (replacement) Bus Éireann service from Rosslare Europort to Waterford city on Monday morning, lamented the absence of the rail alternative.
“When you consider that the 7.15am service linking Fethard-on-Sea and Campile to Waterford was also cancelled, there’s no doubt that had the train been running, most people would still have been able to make their regular journey to Waterford.”
