There was great scenes in Fraher Field on Friday night last as for the first time ever An Rinn came out on top in a senior football championship encounter against Stradbally.
Over the past number of years An Rinn have proven to be a good senior football side and have been involved in some great games, but they have found it hard to advance to the final stages of the championship. However this result may be the one that will inspire then to go that step or two further in 2010.
The county champions got off to a flying start, going three points up with just six minutes played, the second of the three scores a real beauty from Stephen Cunningham.
Things could have got a lot worse for An Rinn on eight minutes when Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh began to make inroads on the An Rinn goal and looked as if he was going to stretch the Covesiders’ lead to six points but Tomás Ó Cadhla pulled off a brilliant save.
Mike Tobin registered An Rinn’s first score on nine minutes with a delightful point only for it to be cancelled out by Tommy Connors.
Shane O Ceallaigh saw a piledriver go over the bar on 12 minutes when a goal looked on, and seven minutes later Mike Tobin hit a 45 to leave just one between the sides.
