The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Mary Hanafin, declared at the weekend that Waterford should be glad to have the diminished representation of three TDs that it had, despite the fact that four were elected at the last general election.
Speaking at the Fianna Fáil regional conference in Waterford last weekend, Minister Hanafin said the constituency was not deprived by not having the opportunity to fill the seat vacated by Martin Cullen through ill-health.
“The idea of a multi-seat constituency is that you will always have representation, not like Great Britain where you’d only have one seat. And you do have a good representative here in Brendan Kenneally,” she said.
Asked why Waterford was being forced to make do with three representatives, the Minister jokingly replied: “Brendan is worth three anytime.”
