A troublesome section of ditch on an infamous stretch of the Old Tramore Road has finally been removed, much to the relief of residents in the Greenfield, Fairfield and Cherrymout housing estates.
While the road leading from the Couse Bridge Roundabout will be realigned over the coming months, residents had voiced repeated concerns about the ditch in question with local City Councillors.
Its removal was welcomed at Monday night’s meeting of Waterford City Council by Councillor Cha O’Neill.
“I would like to thank the officials for their role in the removal of this ditch at long last,” he said.
“But just because this ditch has now been finally removed, that doesn’t mean we’ll be putting a stop to highlighting the problems along this piece of road until they are finally rectified.”
Meanwhile, Cllr O’Neill also highlighted the problems which locals are experiencing due the flooding of John’s River during the recent spell of poor weather.
“It’s a persisting problem for pedestrians and shoppers who can’t access the area when there is a flood and it’s incumbent upon us a Council to face this issue head on and resolve it.”
It’s hoped that the €2 million road raising project between the Superquinn Roundabout and the Green Road past Ballindud will alleviate much of the persisting flood issue.
However, the plan, which is funded by the Office of Public Works, is designed to relive, but not completely eliminate the flood threat in the area.
Cllr O’Neill also complemented the City Council’s Executive, Waterford Chamber and city centre retailers for the splendid array of activities and festive atmosphere that’s been generated in John Roberts Square over the past 10 days.
“At long last, a real European feel has been brought to our city and long may it remain,” he said.
