Ardmore 2-10; Rathgormack 0-6
Ardmore recovered from a heavy defeat to the Nire in Round 1 when they overcame Rathgormack in Leamybrien last Saturday evening. The victory did not come without a cost to Ardmore, as they must now face Ballinameela in their final game without the services of star forward Alan North who was red-carded. This match was certainly not without its controversy as Rathgormack’s Tony Power and Paul Power were also sent to the line.
Both these sides lost their opening games and the winners were going to be in prime position to secure a place in the quarter-finals. The teams were evenly matched during the first half with veteran Richie Power playing at wing-forward but winning a lot of ball for Rathgormack. The men in green and red enjoyed a good start and points from Paul Drohan, Ronan Cahill and Kevin Power gave Rathgormack a three-point lead.
The crucial score of the first half came on fourteen minutes when North seized on a breaking ball outside the Rathgormack square before blasting past Brendan Crotty. That goal, together with points from Niall and Clinton Hennessy, allowed the westerners to lead at the interval by 1-2 to 0-4.
