Hundreds of impoverished Irish people who have no known family, including many from Waterford and the South East, are being buried in Britain every year in unmarked mass graves by local councils.
In the event of a family member not being located, or being unable to help, the local Borough Council has a statutory obligation to step in and arrange a burial. While each Borough has slightly different procedures, it is likely that anyone buried in what are still referred to as ‘paupers’ graves’ will be interred without anything to identify them in a plot containing the remains of up to twenty-five other people.
