A Waterford motorist was one of three young women, all in their 20s, who died in separate road crashes over the bank holiday weekend.

Grace Whelan, from Larchville, was killed when the car she was driving collided with an articulated truck on the N24, about 1km from Kilsheelan village in Co Tipperary, at about 9.50pm on Monday.

The 20-year-old was alone in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was treated for shock. The remains of Ms Whelan were brought to Waterford Regional Hospital for a post mortem.

Grace was one of six children born to Margaret and Dixie Whelan, Larchville. She had recently returned to school at her local St Paul’s Community College and was said to have made a great commitment to her studies and was doing very well.
